209 Sports-High School Football Preview (Preseason Playoff Projections)

Calpreps.com predicted how each team in the Sac-Joaquin Section will finish in its league.  I used their predictions to make the projections of who would make the playoffs.

The current playoff system is relatively new.  It has been in place since 2009.  Under the old system, each league earned a certain amount of playoff berth (the amount of teams depended on the division).  As a result in 2008, 2-8 Foothill of Sacramento made the playoffs, while 8-2 Manteca missed.

The section is divided into six divisions split into two groups.  Divisions I-IV consists of every league except for four (CCAA, SMAL, SDL, SL).  Those four leagues make up divisions V-VI.  The top 2 teams in each league automatically make the playoffs.  The 24 best records of those who did not win league in divisions I-IV and the next 4 best in divisions V-VI are added as at-large teams.

The priority list of the way teams are seeded is this:

1) The amount of wins.
2) How teams finish in league (i.e. an 8-2 league winner is seeded over an 8-2 2nd place or at-large)
3) Amount of opponents wins.
4) Calpreps.com ratings

Note: Teams can be moved due to "seeding injustice", if teams in the same league would play each other in the 1st round, or if the teams in 1st round match-ups are more than 150 miles away from each other.

In divisions I-IV, the 16 largest schools by enrollment are in division I, next 16 are in division II, next 16 are in division III, and the smallest 16 are in division IV.  (Note: the exception is teams can only move down one division lower than the league it is in.  For example, St. Mary's has an enrollment of 976.  It is small enough to be in division IV.  However, St. Mary's is in the Division I, TCAL.  Therefore the Rams have to be in Division II for the playoffs).  In divisions V-VI, the 6 larger schools are in division V and the smaller schools are in division VI.

In this projection, I skipped the opponents wins tiebreaker due to time constraints.  As for moving teams, I only moved teams if their opponent is in the same league.  Teams in the 209 will be in bold and in their primary team colors.  I will announce on here how calpreps predicts the 209 teams will make the playoffs whether it is 1st, 2nd, or at-large.
